The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king.
And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, 8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel,[d] and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.

Introduction:
The Gospel of Matthew opens with a huge claim: That Jesus Christ is the King of Israel. Today we shall see that He is more than an earthly king, but rather the King of Kings!

I. JESUS WAS BORN KING.

Matthew 2:1-2
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

A. MATTHEW POINTS JESUS’ FAMILY TREE BACK TO THE GREAT KING DAVID.

Matthew 1:6
and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah,

B. Matthew was written to the Jews who would hold a person’s genealogy to the highest degree.

C. GOD PROMISED A CONQUERING KING AFTER THE FALL OF MANKIND.

Genesis 3:15
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

D. ISAIAH PROPHESIED A KING TO BE BORN THAT WOULD RULE THE WORLD.

Isaiah 9:6-7
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

F. Isaiah was a prophet who lived about 780 years before Christ was born. Over 40 predictions about Jesus have come true, just in Isaiah Chapter 52 alone!

II. JESUS WAS APPOINTED KING.

Matthew 2:1-2
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Hebrews 5:5
So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;

A. GOD THE FATHER GAVE ALL AUTHORITY TO CHRIST THE SON.

Philippians 2:9
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

B. THE DISCIPLES WITNESSED THE ASCENSION OF CHRIST INTO HEAVEN.

Acts 1:9-11
9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

C. THE DISCIPLE JOHN WITNESSED CHRIST AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD.

Revelation 5:6
And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

III. JESUS IS THE HIGHEST KING.

Hebrews 1:3
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

A. JESUS RULES OVER ALL OTHER KINGS ON EARTH.

Revelation 1:5
and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.

B. HE IS THE KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS!

Revelation 17:14
They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.”

C. Christ is king of the entire world.

Malachi 1:14
For I am a great King, says the Lord of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations.

KING OVER DEATH!

Revelation 1:18
And the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

KING OVER LIFE!

John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.

KING OVER SICKNESS!

Matthew 4:23
And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.

KING OF SALVATION!

Acts 4:12
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Conclusion:
Christ is the King of Kings and He is calling people everywhere to join His Kingdom. Will you answer His Call?
