Search the Scriptures

KEY VERSE:
John 5:39 (ESV)
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,

INTRODUCTION:
The bible talks about God and Salvation through His Son Christ. If we search the Scriptures we will find Him but only if we apply these principles when searching.

I. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES – DILIGENTLY.

Deuteronomy 11:13-16
13“And if you will indeed obey my commandments that I command you today, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
14 he will give the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil.
15 And he will give grass in your fields for your livestock, and you shall eat and be full.
16 Take care lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them;

A. When we search for God in His Word, we are seeking  a relationship with him and not religion.

B. When we diligently search for  Him, we shall find Him!

Jeremiah 29:13
You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

C. God loves those who diligently search after Him.

Proverbs 8:17
I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.

II. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES – DAILY.

1 Chronicles 16:11
Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!

A. Sunday’s are not the only day we are to seek the Lord.

B. We must: PRAY daily READ the BIBLE daily FELLOWSHIP daily OBEY daily SEEK Him in everything we do!

III. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES – EARNESTLY.

2 Timothy 2:15
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

A. Searching the scriptures is no small matter. We should do it with devotion to God and with discipline.

B. The Scriptures are our lifeline to God. Satan knows this and wants to sever our communication with God.

John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

John 6:63
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

IV. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES – HUMBLY .

2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

A. When we read, hear or think about scripture, it is GOD SPEAKING!

2 Peter 1:20
Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation

John 6:45
It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—

V. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES – GUIDED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.

John 16:13
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

A. The Holy Spirit always points us towards GOD.

B. No one can hear, learn, understand or even want the Word of God without first being Saved by Christ.

John 8:43-44
43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

CONCLUSION:

To seek the Scriptures takes a desire to know God personally. If you love someone you will want to get to know them.
